Week 9 # 23

I took the survey and shared some information there for the Library Team. I am definitely interested in maintaining my blog and I want to learn about other 2.0 Programs like "YouSendIt" and, I am sure, many others. I appreciate the time the staff has spent with each of us and I know that I have gained a great deal of experience and programs to use on the Web. I am amazed at how much there is to learn and utilize on the Web. I was frustrated, at times, by how much material there was and how little time to process it all. I know I will have to return to different parts to expand on what I have already done. I feel more confidant now and also more willing to explore. I'm not sure what I will incorporate into my classroom and I will be looking for ways to enhance my teaching. THANK YOU

Week 9 # 22

I prefer to have a good old book right there in my hands to read...to snuggle up with...to reflect on. I think the audio books could be good for time in the car AND I don't spend much time in traffic or on long trips. I used the Guttenberg Project for most of my downloads. The Music is scratchy and OLD. Sounds like I'm playing one of my mom's old 78's with numerous scratches. Also in terms of downloads sometimes there are 30 or so choices and you can't tell until you actually listen to them how they differ or who is the one reading. For example I downloaded "The Tiger" by William Blake which had 1) http://www.gutenberg.org/files/21177/mp3/21177-01.mp3 A PRETTY WEAK VERSION and 2) http://www.gutenberg.org/files/21177/mp3/21177-02.mp3 A MUCH BETTER VERSION (IN MY OPINION). No way to tell before you listen. I also tried the Velveteen Rabbit by Marjorie Williams and had many versions to choose from and here's the one I have selected for you 3) http://www.gutenberg.org/files/23980/mp3/23980-01.mp3

Week 9 # 21

I keep all my pod casts on itunes. Once Anne showed me how to get the pod casts from Podcastalley (which I prefered) to download on itunes it was a snap. You have to go to the RSS feed and the XML file where you will find the link to itunes. You should only save the link and let the rest of the podcasts stay on their server as they take up lots of room. My favorites were dansmathcast; bluegrassradio, video math tutors brainteasers and the Sunday Puzzle from NPR.

Week 8 # 18 (the real deal)

         Week 8 #18       So I'm now in google docs and I am going to try to publish this doc to my blog.  First I will create some content that might be interesting.  I don't want it too sophisticated as that may be more difficult to send. Since it's baseball season I wanted to include the funny Abbott and Costello "Who's on First?" I got help from anne and now I have it done correctly from Google docs. Week 9 # 20

I love Youtube! What can I say. I follow some current and graduated students who produce videos. I can watch old spirit week videos and I can see my favorite music videos. I can bookmark favorites and I can find almost anything there. Here is a clip from a show I saw in Berkeley earlier this year. Ennio Marchetto is fabulous!

Week 8 # 19

Library Thing is a nice way to catalog my book collection. It will take time, however, maybe a summer job. It will keep track of what I have so that I don't have to guess. Maybe I could do lending tags so that I could keep track of where they go!

Week 8 # 18

Well I went to Google Docs and followed instructions, to the best of my ability. I tried many different ways of listing my blog but NO LUCK. I guess its back to the library to find out what I did wrong. I did go back to the Library and Anne and I searched the problems and it seems that it was about saving the settings correctly. By the way you can only publish URL's and not embed's, it seems! So here's my post and embed from YouTube. Week 7 #17

I added a few sites to the math section of the MCHS Learning Wiki. After I got it in the correct place then it was easy. I hope others enjoy the sites! I needed Susan to give me the ability to add things to this Wiki.

Week 7 #16

I don't use Wiki's in Math. I suppose they could be useful in helping students share their concerns/solutions to homework problems and I haven't chosen to do so yet. Might be something for the future. The MCHS Learning Wiki has lots of useful information. I find it to be a place to get ideas from for links to many useful Web sites.

I learned that copyrights not only protect the creator of the intellectual property but encourage the sharing of those thoughts with the community. I had a difficult time using Creative Commons. I was trying to find music and all I could find was data and couldn't get to the songs. I will stop by the Library for assistance.

Week 6 #14

Technorati is a cool sight. Again, it floors me how many different blogs there are about almost anything imaginable. Who has time to follow all these things. Maybe, when I'm really retired, I will have things to do with my spare time. Certainly makes it easier to find information from people "who think they know". Not sure I want mine, in it's current condition, to be accessable to the world. I think I'll keep it in the MCHS Community.

Week 6 #13

I finally added all my bookmarks from my bar to delicious and then a whole set of bookmarks from web pages that I had been saving on another list. Although it took a great deal of time to set them up (and I'm not done tagging yet) it will save me a great deal of time in the end. I signed up for Diigo too and I know I can add them all from delicious but it seems silly to have two different sets.

Week 5 # 12

Created my Rollyo account.  It was easy.  I wish I could add more than 25 sites and I guess I will just have to be more selective and catagorize my sites differently.  It will definitely be good for students to be able to access a group of sites.  I now have to search for all those sites I bookmarked years ago and saved when I did extensive searches on the web.

Travel Ipod Geography quiz was harder than it looked.  I think the time element made it most difficult and the smallness of the map didn't help either.  My IQ  was not what I expected.

No Child Left Behind in Football Terms

FOOTBALL VERSION OF NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND

1. All teams must make the state playoffs and all must win the championship.  If a team does not win the championship, they will be on probation until they are the champions, and coaches will be held accountable.  If after two years they have not won the championship, their footballs and equipment will be taken away until they do will the championship.
2. All kids will be expected to have the same football skills at the same time even if they do not have the same conditions or opportunities to practice on their own. NO exceptions will be made for lack of interest in football, a desire to perform athletically, or genetic abilities or disabilities of themselves or their parents.  All kids will play football at a proficient level.
3. Talented players will be asked to work out on their own, without instruction.  This is necessary because the coaches will be using all their instructional time with the athletes who aren't interested in football, have limited athletic abilities, or whose parents don't like football.
4. Games will be played year round, but statistics will only be kept on the 4th, 8th, and 11th games.  It will create a New Age of Sports where every school is expected to have the same level of talent and all teams will reach the same minimum goals.  If no child gets ahead, then no child is left behind.  If parents do not like this new law, they are encouraged to vote for vouchers and support private schools that can screen out the non-athletes and prevent their children from having to go to school with bad football players.

And the question is-How far off is this really?  Not much!

Week 4 # 8

Actually I needed Nico's help to be able to add a RSS feed directly to my blog.  I now have 2.  They are ABC News and ESPN.  I may add more at a later time.

Week 4 # 9

I added a few more blogs to follow.  I found it very time consuming to scroll through the blogs and find things that were actually useful.  I became aware that there are literally millions of blogs about almost anything you can imagine.  I wouldn't have time or desire to keep up with most of them.  Many of the educational blogs simply seemed to be homework and assignment related.  They were relatively boring.  However they seen to be able to post solutions with a camera type function.  This could be useful for kids that don't have Math Type to do it properly.  It must also be much quicker to just jot down your answers and then take a picture.  If I had lots more time and interest I am sure I could find some good blogs.

#7 Week 3

Technology...You've got to love it...You've got to hate it. I like many of the things I can do because of technology. I love digital cameras although I wish they weren't so expensive (The ones I need to shoot ballet from the back of the theatre without a flash). I love not having to develop my pictures. I like that I can delete them instantly. I love that I can take as many as I want and never worry about the cost. I wish the speed between pressing the button and taking the picture were a bit faster ( they are improving daily; especially in the high end cameras). I miss the prints and I know that I can print them at home or at Longs for a few cents.

I love Word processing. I remember having to re-type papers in college because the Professor wouldn't accept even a whiteout correction on the finished paper...it had to be pristine. It's much easier to compose and edit on a computer word processor. I like being able to stay in touch with e-mail. It's instant and the feedback is usually quick, even from my friends in Japan. Much cheaper as well.


I love using Geometer's Sketchpad http://www.dynamicgeometry.com/ in the classroom. It makes the subject so much more flexible and visual. Nothing can replace that ability to really "see" the relationships and how they change when I chose different parameters.

What I hate is WHEN IT DOESN'T WORK! When I have something planned for class and the interface doesn't work or the speed is too slow or too many people are on the server or the printer is jammed. When I become dependent on it's services and the services are not available I get frustrated. Like the photo that is supposed to be at the top of this Blog.

SO AFTER CAREFUL EXAMINATION THE CODE (IN THE TEXT PREVIEW) ACTUALLY TURNED INTO THE PICTURE I WANTED SO...MY FRUSTRATION WAS UNJUSTIFIED. HOWEVER I STILL CAN'T IMPORT A SKETCHPAD SKETCH INTO THE BLOG OR EVEN MAKE MY URL A HOT LINK.

#1 (Week1) and #2 (Week 1)

 # 1.  I am interested in finding out about sharing information other ways than e-mail or facebook.  I hope that it will not be as frustrating as the opening session.  I wish I was on edublog rather blogger because I think most participants will be on that.  It should be easier to share that way.  Maybe we can learn how to connect the 2 blogs so I will stay on this one for now.

#2.  The easiest for me is #4 Have confidence in yourself as a competent effective learner...I have many past experiences to verify this habit.  The most difficult for me is #3 View problems as challenges...I always want to solve the problems as quickly as possible or avoid it altogether if it will bring stress.

Following Directions

I wonder often if the tech-challenged can really follow the directions of the technically astute?  It is difficult to find out what I am really supposed to be doing.  I am kind of muddling along and I suppose that someone from the library staff will contact me if I am somehow not on track.
